How to Lay a Gym Sled Track
Installing a gym sled track is a great way to add a dedicated functional training area to your space. Whether it’s for sled pushes, sprint work, conditioning drills or general performance training, a properly fitted sled track can improve both the look and usability of your gym. In this guide, we’ll walk you through the key steps for laying a gym sled track, helping you achieve a clean, durable and professional finish alongside your existing gym flooring.

Before you begin, gather everything you need for the installation. You’ll need your sled track, adhesive, measuring tape, a sharp utility knife and something heavy to press the track down. Make sure the surface is clean, dry and level before applying adhesive.
Essential Tools and Materials
Start by measuring the area where you plan to lay the sled tracks. Accurate measurements are crucial to ensure a perfect fit and avoid any gaps or overlaps. Ideally you'd get the sled track in and lay your gym tiles around it.
Precise Measurements

Clean the surface thoroughly before laying your sled track, removing any dust, dirt or loose debris. A clean, dry and level surface helps the adhesive bond properly and gives the sled track a stronger, longer-lasting fit.

Tips for Laying a Gym Sled Track
- Before laying a gym sled track, start by choosing the right track for your space. At Recharge Fitness, the most popular option is a fully bespoke sled track, designed around your branding, layout and training needs. Standard 2m x 10m sled tracks are also a solid choice for conditioning zones, while plain sled tracks offer a more cost-effective option for commercial gyms, PT studios and functional training spaces.
When choosing a gym sled track, look at the track thickness, density and overall quality. Most of our bespoke sled tracks are 15mm thick, making them suitable for commercial gym environments and regular sled use. Higher-density tracks will usually perform better under heavy traffic, repeated sled pushes and daily conditioning work. Our plain 12mm sled track is also a strong option for value-focused gym fit-outs.
Plan the layout carefully before installing your sled track. Think about how people will move through the gym, where sled work will take place and how the track will sit alongside your existing rubber gym flooring. Mark out the area using chalk or masking tape, making sure your lines are straight and the track is aligned properly with the surrounding flooring and equipment layout.
Most gym sled tracks are supplied pre-cut to suit the space, but you may still need to make small adjustments during installation. If cutting is required, use a sharp utility knife and a metal ruler to create a clean, straight edge. Taking your time here helps the track sit neatly against the surrounding gym flooring and gives the finished installation a much more professional look.
Make sure the subbase is solid, level and clean before laying the sled track. If you’re installing a 15mm sled track next to 20mm rubber gym tiles, it can usually be laid directly onto an even concrete floor, leaving a small 5mm height difference. If you’re fitting it alongside 30mm gym flooring, or want a completely flush finish, the base may need to be raised first.
To raise the base, you can use thin rubber underlay or plywood sheets, secured properly with strong adhesive. The aim is to create a stable, level surface underneath the sled track so it doesn’t move, lift or dip over time. This is especially important in commercial gyms where the track will be used regularly for sled pushes, sprint work and heavy conditioning sessions.
Once the sled track is positioned correctly, secure one end with heavy weights. Bumper plates work well for this. Roll up one half of the track, then apply adhesive to both the floor and the underside of the track. Wait until the adhesive becomes tacky, then slowly unroll the track one metre at a time, pressing it firmly into place as you go.
Repeat the same process on the other side, moving the weights across to keep the track secure while you work. Once fully laid, use a weighted sled or another flat, heavy object to press down the surface and remove air bubbles. Add extra weight to the edges, corners and joins, then leave the sled track untouched for 24 hours before using the area.
Avoid using sleds or heavy equipment on the track for at least 48 hours after installation. For the best adhesive performance, keep the room temperature between 5°C and 25°C while the track cures. Once the adhesive has set, inspect the full installation for loose sections, tidy the edges and vacuum the surface thoroughly to remove any debris before use.
