In the ever-evolving world of fitness, two gym types have been making significant waves: Hyrox and CrossFit. Both have garnered dedicated followings and offer unique approaches to fitness, but which one is experiencing faster growth, and which should you consider starting? We dive into the differences, pros, and growth trends of each to help you make an informed decision...be warned some of the information is factual, some is opinion based on what we are seeing having set up over 50 gyms this year.

Understanding Hyrox and CrossFit
Hyrox: Hyrox is a relatively new fitness competition that combines running with functional workouts. It’s designed to test endurance, strength, and speed through a series of eight functional workouts interspersed with 1 km runs. The workouts include exercises like sled pushes, rowing, and wall balls, making it a comprehensive test of overall fitness. There are 5000 Hyrox gyms globally, with over 11,000 paying CrossFit gyms.
We have been launching Hyrox gyms up and down the country throughout 2024. It's anecdotal and slightly biased feedback perhaps, but Hyrox seems to have the most buzz right now and it feels like (to Recharge) that they are growing the fastest. But the foundations are there for CrossFit and it is still fully in demand.
CrossFit: CrossFit, is a super well-established fitness regimen that focuses on high-intensity functional movements. You've no doubt heard all about it, the first rule of CrossFit is to talk constantly about CrossFit. It incorporates elements from various sports and types of exercise, including weightlifting, gymnastics, and cardio. CrossFit workouts, known as WODs (Workouts of the Day), are varied and aim to improve overall fitness. It's fair to say CrossFit shook up the industry and I'm still wowed by the community behind it. There are over 700 official CrossFit boxes in the UK with hundreds more 'functional fitness' spaces.
Growth Trends
Hyrox Growth: Hyrox has been rapidly gaining popularity, it's big in the US and growing crazy fast here in the UK. There has been a 260% increase in new affiliates in recent years. Its appeal lies in its structured competition format, which attracts both seasoned athletes and fitness enthusiasts looking for a new challenge. The community aspect and the ability to track progress through standardised events have contributed to its growing fanbase.
CrossFit Growth: CrossFit has been a dominant force in the fitness industry for over a decade. Its growth has been fueled by its strong community, the CrossFit Games, and its adaptability to various fitness levels. While it has faced some challenges, such as controversies and changes in leadership, CrossFit remains a popular choice for those seeking a diverse and intense workout regimen.
We are still helping people launch CrossFit boxes, but from a Recharge perspective, we are working with more people to launch Hyrox boxes currently. One thing we are seeing a lot, is big commercial gyms with 2000 - 5000 members, installing Hyrox areas within their gym, and adding an extra string to their bow.
Pros of Each
Pros of Hyrox:
Structured Competition: Hyrox offers a clear and consistent competition format, making it easy to track progress.
Endurance Focus: The combination of running and functional workouts provides a balanced approach to fitness.
Community: Like CrossFit, Hyrox fosters a strong sense of community and camaraderie among participants.
Commercials: Lower investment required via Hyrox affiliation, lots of hype and unsaturated market, relatively low set up costs of the gym; you don't need a huge amount of gym equipment vs a commercial gym. Memberships are typically around £50/m which is less than CrossFit.
Pros of CrossFit:
Variety: CrossFit’s constantly varied workouts keep things interesting and challenging.
Scalability: Workouts can be scaled to suit different fitness levels, making it accessible to beginners and advanced athletes alike.
Community Support: The supportive community is a hallmark of CrossFit, encouraging members to push their limits.
Commercials: Gym equipment-wise, it's not too expensive, commercial-grade flooring, a decent rig, free weights, and some basic cardio kit. CrossFit affiliation is fairly pricey, but it's useful to launch with to grow initial memberships. Memberships average around £90/m depending on location. One perk is that due to the incredible community, you'll likely get members who end up coaching and volunteering which help you with costs and drives profitability.
Which Should You Start?
When deciding whether to start a Hyrox or CrossFit gym, consider your target audience and business goals. If you’re looking to tap into a growing trend with a structured competition format, Hyrox might be the way to go. Its focus on endurance and functional fitness can attract a diverse clientele. On the other hand, if you want to offer a varied and intense workout experience with a well-established brand, CrossFit could be the better choice. Its adaptability and strong community support can help build a loyal customer base.
What do you enjoy more personally? What is the competition in your local area?
Conclusion
Both Hyrox and CrossFit offer unique benefits and cater to different fitness preferences. Hyrox is gaining momentum with its structured competition format, while CrossFit continues to thrive with its varied workouts and strong community. Ultimately, the decision should align with your business vision and the needs of your target market. Whether you choose Hyrox or CrossFit, both have the potential to create a thriving fitness community.
What I'd probably consider is a hybrid. Why not offer both within your space, the gym equipment list is largely the same with a few nuisances, but you aren't looking at a huge additional spend. But you increase your potential footfall and memberships.
