SBR vs EPDM Gym Flooring: Which Is Right for Your Gym?


Choosing the right gym flooring is one of the most important decisions you will make when fitting out a commercial or home gym. Get it right and you have a surface that protects your equipment, absorbs impact, and looks great for years. Get it wrong and you are dealing with cracked tiles, foul odours, and a floor that simply does not hold up to daily use.

The two materials we recommend most consistently are SBR and EPDM rubber. Both are excellent choices, but they serve different purposes, aesthetics, and budgets.

This guide breaks down exactly what each material is, where it performs best, and how to decide which is right for your space.


SBR stands for Styrene Butadiene Rubber. It is a synthetic rubber compound made primarily from recycled tyre crumb. This manufacturing process is what gives SBR tiles their characteristic dark appearance and their robust, dense feel underfoot.

SBR has been the industry workhorse for gym flooring for decades, and for good reason. It is highly durable, excellent at absorbing heavy impact, and cost-effective compared to premium alternatives. If you are fitting out a functional training gym, a CrossFit box, or a high-traffic commercial facility, SBR is very likely on your shortlist.


Key characteristics of SBR:

  • Dense, high-impact absorption — ideal for heavy dropping of weights and barbell movements

  • Textured surface with strong grip — particularly effective for deadlifts, squats, and Olympic lifting

  • Cost-effective — delivers excellent performance at a lower price point than EPDM

One thing worth noting on cleaning: because of its textured, grippier surface, SBR does require a string mop or microfibre mop for effective cleaning. A flat-head mop will not get into the surface properly, so keep that in mind for your maintenance routine.

EPDM stands for Ethylene Propylene Diene Monomer. Unlike SBR, which uses recycled rubber crumb, EPDM is a virgin synthetic rubber compound. That distinction matters in several practical ways.


Because EPDM uses higher-quality raw material, it offers a smoother, denser surface with a more refined aesthetic. It is the material of choice when appearance matters as much as performance — boutique studios, premium commercial gyms, hotel fitness facilities, and high-specification home gyms all tend to lean towards EPDM.


Our EPDM range carries a B1 fire rating, which is a requirement for many commercial gym installations and is worth confirming with your fire risk assessor before purchase.

  • No odour — virgin rubber does not carry the tyre smell sometimes associated with recycled SBR (not a problem we face but it's one we hear in the industry)

  • Easier to clean — the smoother surface works well with a standard flat-head mop

  • Higher price point — reflective of the premium material and finish

Which Flooring Should You Choose?

The honest answer is: it depends on what you are building and who it is for.


Choose SBR if:


You are fitting out a high-traffic commercial facility on a budget. CrossFit boxes, Hyrox gyms, functional fitness studios, and strength-focused commercial gyms all put enormous daily demands on their flooring. SBR handles heavy barbell drops, loaded sleds, kettlebell work, and constant foot traffic without complaint. It is robust, proven, and cost-effective at scale.


Budget is a priority without compromising on performance. If you need to floor a large area — 200sqm, 500sqm, or more — SBR gives you the performance credentials you need at a price point that makes commercial projects viable.


Grip is your primary concern. The textured surface of SBR provides exceptional traction for lifting. If your clients are doing a lot of deadlifts, Olympic lifting, or heavy compound movements, that grip is an asset.


Choose EPDM if:


Aesthetics matter as much as performance. Boutique studios, premium PT studios, hotel gyms, and upmarket home gyms are environments where the floor needs to look as good as it functions. EPDM's smoother finish and colour options make it the obvious choice here.


You have commercial fire rating requirements. For any gym installation where a B1 fire rating is mandatory or requested by your insurer or building manager, EPDM is the material that meets that specification.


You want an odour-free environment. Some clients are sensitive to the rubber smell that SBR can carry, particularly in smaller or less ventilated spaces. EPDM, being a virgin compound, does not carry that odour.


You are fitting a home gym where finish is a priority. If you are investing in a home gym — whether that is a garage conversion, a garden room, or a dedicated space within your home — the EPDM range delivers a finish that feels intentional and considered rather than purely functional.


What About Thickness?

Both SBR and EPDM are available in multiple thicknesses, and the right choice depends on the type of activity in your gym.


As a general guide:

  • 15mm — suitable for most gym use, cardio equipment, light weightlifting, general fitness

  • 20mm — recommended for functional training, barbell work, and moderate weight dropping

  • 30mm+ — advised for Olympic lifting platforms, heavy dropping zones, or anywhere that protects both the floor and the equipment underneath


For mixed-use commercial gyms, it is common to use different thicknesses in different zones — heavier tiles under lifting areas, lighter tiles in cardio or studio zones.
