At Recharge Fitness, we believe that staying strong and fit isn't just about the equipment we sell – it's about living the values we promote. That's why we regularly organise team challenges that bring our crew together, get the blood pumping, and remind us all why we're passionate about fitness...it's also good to see who is top dog at different exercises.
The Challenge: Olympic Bumper Plate Deadlift Showdown
Our latest team challenge at our Bristol location was all about testing our deadlifting prowess using our stunning coloured Olympic bumper plates. The rules were simple, but the competition was fierce:
The Setup:
Starting weight: 70kg (25kg plates on each end + 20kg Olympic bar)
Progressive loading through our complete range of bumper plates ended at 170kg.
Each team member takes their turn at the current weight
Here's the twist: after each successful lift, we played rock, paper, scissors
Win the game? Pass the bar to the next person
Lose the game? You're lifting again!
Strategic Challenge Selection
We'll be honest – there was some tactical thinking behind choosing deadlifts for this challenge. Josh, our Operations Manager and arguably the strongest (definitely the most stacked) member of the team, was nursing an injury. Rather than watch him effortlessly show us all up in a different lift, we cleverly chose deadlifts to level the playing field a bit. Sometimes strategy is just as important as strength!
Pushing the Limits
The competition heated up as we progressed through the weights, with our coloured Olympic plates creating an impressive rainbow of iron. The team pushed hard, Harry hit at PB, then Nathan equalled his...but he ended up doing reps! Reaching a top-end lift of 170kg – though the competitive spirit meant we didn't stop there with Ryan adding more and hitting a post challenge PB! The beauty of the rock, paper, scissors element was that even after hitting personal bests, you might find yourself back under the bar if luck wasn't on your side.
More Than Just Lifting Weights
What started as a bit of fun quickly became an incredible display of determination, teamwork, and friendly competition. Watching colleagues cheer each other on, celebrate personal bests, and push through challenging weights reminded us why these team challenges are so important to our company culture. It's a permanent fixture in our weekly schedule that we all look forward too...mainly, we do notice a few of the team work from home or seem to arrange gym installations on these days.
Why Team Challenges Matter
Building Stronger Bonds There's something special about sweating alongside your colleagues. These challenges break down barriers and create connections that extend far beyond the office. When you've seen someone dig deep to hit a personal best – or tactically avoid showing off due to injury – you understand their character in a completely different way.
Promoting Health and Fitness As a company dedicated to creating a healthier nation, we need to walk the walk. These regular challenges keep fitness at the forefront of our minds and encourage everyone to maintain their strength and conditioning, even when working around the odd injury.
Fostering Healthy Competition A bit of friendly competition never hurt anyone! The rock, paper, scissors element added an unexpected twist that had everyone laughing, groaning, and cheering in equal measure. It's amazing how a simple game can turn a straightforward lifting session into an fun team experience – and sometimes save the rest of us from complete embarrassment!
Living Our Values At Recharge Fitness, we're committed to going the extra mile, supporting our team, and maintaining accountability. These challenges embody all of these values whilst having a brilliant time doing it.
The Equipment That Made It Possible
Our coloured Olympic bumper plates aren't just about looking good (though they certainly do that). They're designed for exactly this kind of use – repeated drops, consistent performance, and the durability to handle whatever we throw at them. From the 70kg starting weight right up to 170kg and beyond, these plates performed flawlessly throughout the challenge.
The 20kg power bar provided the perfect foundation, offering a very good grip and balance needed for safe, effective deadlifting across all fitness levels within our team – even accommodating tactical challenge selections!
If you'd like to secure your own 150kg Olympic bumper plate set (currently on offer) you can here!

This deadlift challenge has set the bar high (quite literally) for our next team event. We're already planning our next challenge, and with our extensive range of gym equipment at our disposal, the possibilities are endless.
