Onyx: When Premium Cardio Just Isn’t Premium Enough

Last week I spent time at Matrix HQ going through the full Onyx range for a VIP customer project. And honestly, after seeing it all up close again, I felt obliged to put a proper blog post together, not as hype, but as a clear explanation of what makes this range different, and who it's actually for (chances are, if you're not absolutely minted, it's not for you!).

Luxury gym with Oynx treadmill

But if youhave been looking at premium cardio kit and thought, This all looks the same once it's in a gym, Onyx will change your mind.

We've supplied and installed a lot of commercial equipment over the years, from hard-wearing, great-value workhorses right through to the kind of kit you'd expect to see in private members'clubs and luxury home gyms. And Onyx sits firmly at the top end.

It's super high-end, it's really expensive (just being honest), and it's also (surprisingly) becoming one of the most popular ranges we supply for customers who are; let's call say, serious about quality with a healthy bank balance.

But here's the interesting part: even the super-rich still want a good deal, and that's where we are seeing success. We're able to access strong trade savings on Onyx, we can often make it a far smarter purchase than people expect, especially when you factor in the experience, the aesthetics, and the long-term value.

What makes Onyx different?

A lot of premium equipment is nice. Onyx is immersive.

It's not just about having a bigger screen (which is does, it's massive) or a shinier finish.

It's about the way the details stack up and how those details (including a ripple effect design finish on the frames) create a ripple effect across the whole training experience. It just screams luxury.

1) The 32 screen is a statement (and a genuine upgrade)

A 32 display isn't a gimmick it changes how the equipment feels to use.

  • Workouts are easier to follow

  • Entertainment feels properly cinematic

  • The whole console experience feels more like a premium device than a gym machine

If you're building a luxury gym space, the screen alone can become a talking point.

2) Small details that make a huge difference

Onyx is one of those ranges where you notice the craft.

  • Ripple effect on the frame: subtle, but it makes the machine look and feel engineered rather than mass-produced

  • Ambient lighting: elevates the space, especially in darker studios, premium garages, and boutique environments

  • Immersive touch controls: the interface feels modern and intuitive, more like high-end consumer tech than traditional gym equipment

Individually, these might sound likenice-to-haves. Together, they create a premium feel that's hard to unsee once you've experienced it.

Why we're confident recommending it

We're not interested in selling equipment just because it's expensive.

We've worked with a range of customers, including professional sports stars, TV personalities and the financially elite, and what we've seen is consistent: when people care about performance and presentation, Onyx delivers.

It's proving especially popular with:

  • Luxury home gym owners

  • High-end property developers and architects

  • Boutique studios that want a premium look

  • Private training facilities where experience matters

In short: if the gym is part of a lifestyle, not just a utility space, Onyx fits.

The honest truth: Onyx won't be right for everyone

We're big believers in matching the kit to the goal and the budget.

If you're building a gym that needs to be tough, effective, and value-led, there are other ranges we love.

Half Human: exceptional value for HIIT-focused cardio

If you want serious bang-for-buck for HIIT training and conditioning, we're huge fans of the Half Human range. It's built for hard sessions, it's great value, and it makes a lot of sense for performance-first spaces.

Spirit and Matrix: strong mid-price-point commercial options

For many commercial gyms, studios, and PT spaces, Spirit and Matrix (outside of Onyx) hit the sweet spot:

  • Reliable commercial-grade build

  • Strong feature set

  • Sensible price point

They're ideal when you want quality that stands up to daily use without pushing too far financially into luxury territory.

So who should choose Onyx?

Onyx is for you if:

  • You want your gym to feel like a premium environment, not just a functional one

  • You care about the experience as much as the workout

  • You're building a space where aesthetics and technology matter

  • You want top-end kit, but you still appreciate value (and trade savings can make a real difference)
